When a Toyota technician plugs in their diagnostic tool, they're not just reading fault codes. They're accessing a second layer of the infotainment system — an engineering menu that shows hybrid battery module voltages, inverter temperature, motor output, and dozens of live data parameters that Toyota's engineers use to evaluate system health. And this menu isn't locked behind any special tool. It's accessible through the touchscreen itself, with the right sequence.

The sequences differ between Entune generations and by model year. Using the wrong sequence won't damage anything, but it also won't work.

⚠ Before You Start

The engineering menu is a read/display tool first — most owners should use it to view data only. Some sub-menus allow calibration and setting changes that can affect how systems behave. This guide marks what's safe to view versus what requires technical knowledge. Never change a setting you don't fully understand. If you're unsure, viewing the menu is harmless; changing values is not.

Understanding the Three Infotainment Generations

Toyota hybrid engineering menus are grouped by infotainment generation, not by model. Knowing which generation your vehicle uses determines which sequence works:

Prius Gen 3 (2010–2015) · Entune 1.0

Prius Third Generation

  1. 1 Start the vehicle and allow the Multi-Information Display to fully load (approximately 30 seconds)
  2. 2 On the main Audio screen, tap and hold the top-left corner of the touchscreen for approximately 3 seconds
  3. 3 While still holding the corner, simultaneously tap the bottom-right corner once
  4. 4 Release both. A diagnostic menu should appear titled "Diagnosis" or "Engineering Mode"
  5. 5 If nothing appears, return to the main Map or Home screen and retry. The screen must be at its default state.

Note: On some 2010–2012 Prius units, the sequence is top-left corner hold → top-right corner tap → bottom-left corner tap. Try both if the first doesn't work.

Prius Gen 4 (2016–2022) · Entune 2.0 / Audio Plus

Prius Fourth Generation + C-HR Hybrid

  1. 1 Power on the vehicle. Navigate to the main Audio or Home screen
  2. 2 Press and hold the "Menu" button on the physical controls (not the screen) for 5 seconds
  3. 3 Without releasing, tap the top-left corner of the touchscreen twice
  4. 4 Release the Menu button. The Engineering/Diagnosis menu appears

  1. 1 Start vehicle, go to the main home screen
  2. 2 Tap the top-left corner of the screen and hold for 3 seconds

  1. 1 Start the vehicle (Ready mode). Wait for the infotainment screen to fully boot

Note: Prius Gen 5 (2023+) and the bZ4X use a newer multi-media unit with a slightly different architecture. Try the 5-tap hold sequence first. If that fails, from the App screen: tap Settings → scroll to the bottom → tap the version number 3 times → Engineering Mode unlocks.

Highlander Hybrid (2014–2019) · Sienna Hybrid · Entune 2.0

Larger Toyota Hybrids (2014–2019)

  1. 1 On the main map or home screen, press and hold the physical power button for the audio system for 5 seconds
  2. 2 While holding, tap the top-left corner of the touchscreen
  3. 3 Release both and tap the bottom-left corner once
  4. 4 Engineering/Diagnosis menu should appear. If not, try the top-left hold + bottom-right tap sequence from the Audio screen.

Note: The 2021+ Sienna Hybrid uses Entune 3.0 — use the 5-tap sequence for that model.

Why sequences differ

Toyota's infotainment systems are developed by different suppliers across generations — Fujitsu Ten, Panasonic Automotive, and DENSO have all built Toyota head units. The engineering menu access sequence is tied to the specific hardware and firmware version, not the Toyota model name. This is why a 2019 RAV4 Hybrid and a 2016 RAV4 Hybrid use completely different sequences — they have different underlying systems.

The Most Useful Data Points for Owners

1. Individual Block Voltages

This is the most valuable piece of data in the entire menu for hybrid owners. Your hybrid battery isn't one big battery — it's made up of 14 to 34 individual modules (depending on model) wired in series. The engineering menu shows the voltage of each module individually. A healthy battery will show all modules within 0.1–0.3 volts of each other. If one or two modules are reading significantly lower than the others (more than 0.5V deviation), those are the modules that are degrading — and they're dragging the whole pack down. This tells you whether you need a full battery replacement or just 1–2 module swaps.

2. Inverter Coolant Temperature

The inverter converts DC battery power to AC power for the electric motors. It runs hot. Normal operating temperature for the inverter cooling system is 40–70°C at highway speeds. If you're seeing temperatures above 85°C consistently, the inverter coolant level may be low or the cooling pump may be weakening. This is data your dashboard never shows — and a failing inverter cooling pump is a $400–$800 repair that becomes a $3,000+ inverter replacement if left too long.

3. State of Charge Accuracy

The dashboard battery gauge on Toyota hybrids shows an estimated charge range — typically between 40% and 80% of the actual battery capacity. The engineering menu shows the true SOC percentage. A healthy battery will show actual SOC values in normal driving between 35–75%. If your battery is reading at or below 30% under light driving conditions, the pack is losing capacity.

The engineering menu is a diagnostic tool. How to Exit the Engineering Menu

On all Toyota hybrid infotainment systems, pressing the Home button or the physical "Menu" button returns you to the normal interface. The engineering menu does not persist after a key cycle — every time you restart the vehicle, the system returns to its normal state. No settings from the read-only sections are retained between sessions.

⚠ One Setting to Absolutely Avoid

On some Entune 3.0 systems, the engineering menu includes a section labeled "HV System Init" or "Battery Initialize." This function is designed for use after replacing the hybrid battery pack — it resets the battery management system's learned parameters. Running this on a healthy, unmodified battery resets all of the system's calibration data and can temporarily cause the car to behave erratically until the management system relearns. Leave this section alone unless a technician specifically instructs you to use it after battery service.
