The first hidden features article covered the basics — B gear, hybrid battery indicator, and the energy monitor screen. Most Toyota hybrid owners have at least heard of those by now. These nine features are different. Some are buried three menus deep in systems that most owners open once and never return to. Others require knowing what you're looking for before the feature even appears to exist. And one of them — the acoustic pedestrian alert customization — Toyota barely mentions anywhere outside the owner's manual appendix.

Every Toyota hybrid built since 2016 includes an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System — a federally mandated system that emits a sound when the car moves on electric power below 25 mph, so pedestrians hear you coming. Most owners know the car makes this sound. Almost none know it's adjustable.

In Settings → Vehicle → Sound Settings (path varies by model year), you'll find an AVAS volume control. Toyota allows adjustment between three levels. The factory default is mid-level. In quiet environments or at night when the sound is more noticeable, reducing AVAS volume is perfectly legal and doesn't affect pedestrian safety thresholds. The sound remains audible to pedestrians at all settings — the adjustment is within the range Toyota's engineers deemed safe.

Scheduled Charging — Set It and Stop Paying Peak Electricity Rates

PHEV Toyota models (plug-in hybrids) allow you to schedule when the car charges from the wall outlet. This feature exists specifically because electricity rates vary throughout the day — most utilities charge higher rates during peak hours (typically 4–9 PM) and lower rates overnight. Charging a RAV4 Prime during peak hours versus off-peak hours can cost meaningfully different amounts depending on your utility.

Through the Toyota app or the in-car charging settings screen, you can set a departure time and a charge start time. The car calculates backward from your departure to begin charging at the optimal time — finishing just before you leave rather than charging immediately when plugged in at 6 PM. A RAV4 Prime owner on a typical time-of-use electricity plan can save $15–$30 per month just by enabling this feature.

Predictive Efficient Drive — The Feature That Reads the Road Ahead

Predictive Efficient Drive (available on Entune 3.0 systems when navigation is active) uses your route data to anticipate upcoming hills, curves, and traffic conditions and pre-adjusts the hybrid system accordingly. When the navigation knows a downhill section is coming, the system slightly increases engine-driven charging before the descent — so the battery is ready to capture maximum regenerative energy on the way down. When a highway on-ramp approaches, it manages battery charge to ensure sufficient power reserve for acceleration.

This feature is on by default, but it only functions when: (1) you have an active navigation route set, (2) your map data is current, and (3) Predictive Efficient Drive is enabled in settings. Many owners drive without setting a navigation route, which means this system is doing nothing for them even though it's enabled. Setting a destination — even for a familiar route — activates it.

How to find it: Settings → Navigation → Eco Drive Support → Enable Predictive Efficient Drive. Then set a navigation destination to activate it.

Remote Climate Pre-Conditioning Using Grid Power (Not Battery)

Toyota PHEVs allow you to pre-condition the cabin temperature — heat it in winter, cool it in summer — while the car is still plugged in. The critical detail most owners miss: when plugged in, pre-conditioning uses grid electricity, not the traction battery. This means you arrive at your car with the interior already at your preferred temperature, and your full EV range is intact because the battery wasn't depleted warming or cooling the cabin.

In climates with extreme temperatures, this is a significant feature. Heating a cabin on a -10°F morning from an 0°F starting point while using grid power instead of battery power is the difference between losing 10–15 miles of EV range and losing none. Set a departure schedule and Toyota does the rest.

The Hybrid System Indicator — Your Real-Time Driving Efficiency Score

The multi-information display on Toyota hybrids includes a Hybrid System Indicator (HSI) — a bar graph that shows in real time how efficiently you're using the hybrid system. Most owners glance at it occasionally. The owners who treat it as active feedback significantly improve their fuel economy.

The HSI shows three zones: ECO (below center line, running on electric or gentle engine), Normal (around center, balanced use), and Power (above center, aggressive engine use). Toyota's fuel economy testing is performed with an HSI target of staying in or near the ECO zone during most of city driving. An owner who actively tries to keep the HSI in the ECO zone through smooth acceleration and early deceleration consistently reports 5–10% better real-world fuel economy than owners who ignore it.

To customize what displays on your MID: Settings → Vehicle → Display → Multi-Information Display → Add/Remove Hybrid System Indicator.

EV Mode Lock — Keeping Electric-Only Until You Decide

Standard EV mode on Toyota hybrids automatically exits when you exceed the speed threshold or demand too much power. There is a lesser-known behavior: on some models, pressing the EV button while already in EV mode and then pressing it again immediately activates an "EV priority" mode that is slightly more aggressive about keeping the engine off — using more battery output before the engine kicks in rather than triggering at the standard threshold.

This isn't a true "lock" — the engine will still start if you demand significant power or exceed the speed limit for electric-only driving. But it shifts the threshold, allowing sustained electric driving at slightly higher speeds (typically 2–4 mph higher) before the engine engages. Useful for quiet neighborhoods, parking structures, or noise-sensitive zones where staying in EV mode a few mph longer matters.

How to activate: Press EV button → wait 2 seconds → press EV button again. The EV indicator light should pulse briefly to confirm the shifted threshold.

Vehicle Health Report — Your Monthly Hybrid System Audit

Toyota Connected Services (available via the Toyota app on connected vehicles) includes a Vehicle Health Report feature that sends a monthly summary of your hybrid system's status — including hybrid battery status, fuel system health, electrical system alerts, and upcoming maintenance milestones. Most Toyota hybrid owners who have Connected Services enabled have never looked at this report because they don't know it exists.

The report is sent automatically to your email associated with your Toyota Owner account. To ensure you're receiving it: open the Toyota App → Connected Services → Vehicle Health → Enable Monthly Report. The report doesn't replace professional inspection but provides early alerts for items like "hybrid battery cooling system service due" before they become dashboard warnings.

In Settings → Display → Display Brightness → Night Mode Sensitivity, you can adjust how aggressively the system dims at night. Rear Motor Lock — The Snow/Sand Setting Most AWD Hybrid Owners Never Use

Toyota's Electronic On-Demand AWD system in hybrid models uses a rear electric motor to power the rear wheels on demand — there's no traditional rear differential or mechanical connection to the front axle. Most drivers know this system adds rear traction when the front wheels slip. What most don't know: in specific off-road or snow conditions, there's a feature accessible through Trail Mode (or the AWD Lock button on some models) that forces the rear motor to remain engaged continuously, rather than engaging only on wheel slip detection.

In standard AWD mode, the rear motor reacts to front wheel slip — there's a brief delay while the system detects slip and engages the rear. In the locked/continuous mode, the rear motor is always contributing, eliminating that delay. On fresh snow, sand, or slippery gravel this makes the vehicle noticeably more stable from a stop — the delay before rear engagement causes the brief moment of understeer that you sometimes feel. The trade-off is slightly lower fuel economy from continuous rear motor engagement, but on slippery surfaces the stability benefit is worth it.

How to activate: With the vehicle in Park or below 25 mph, press and hold the AWD Lock button for 3 seconds. The AWD Lock indicator will remain illuminated continuously rather than pulsing. To exit: press again or accelerate above 25 mph.
Why Toyota Doesn't Advertise These

Toyota's marketing and dealer training focuses on what sells cars — fuel economy numbers, safety ratings, reliability reputation. The features in this article aren't selling points. They're operational refinements that matter after you've owned the car for a year. Toyota builds them in and documents them in the owner's manual — the document that statistically, most owners don't read past page 30.
